Your Balance Check-in

Balance is both a noun and a verb. The noun definition of balance defines it as a distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady. Don't we all need that at some point? As a verb, it means to keep or put something in a steady position so that it does not fall.

In talking with Vatrena about what balance really looks like in life, we broke down the myth that balance looks like a put together life, or that it looks the same for any two people. Balance instead, is something internal to aim towards. Borrowing a Swedish and Norwegian word, we learned about Lagom - meaning not too much or not too little. Lagom refers to just the right amount, which is something that each person has to decide on individually.

Below are some questions to contemplate as you consider the areas where you might be striving for a more balanced life - whether that be in relationships, at work, in physical health, or in any other way!

We invite you to reflect on these questions and consider them as journal prompts. You don’t have to do them all - just what feels right to you. We encourage you to find a companion to discuss answers! In addition, we encourage you to examine your own life and consider where you feel the balance is off. Is there some small step you can take to even your internal balance scale?

Journal Prompts:

  1. Why do you think balance in life is important for you and for the people in your life?

  2. How are you currently balancing the multiple priorities in your life?

  3. What was the last time you were out of balance? If you did something to change it, what was it? If you didn’t change it, what might you have done?

  4. Do you have any warning signs that your life is off balance?

  5. How does balance play into our society right now?

  6. What would you tell your 20 year old self about balance?

  7. What does your dream balanced life look like in the future?

  8. What one thing can you start practicing this week to work towards a more balanced life?
